Congregation Beth Shalom is a participatory and inclusive community dedicated to learning, prayer, friendship, and Jewish life in beautiful south-central Indiana. The congregation has over 210 household members and serves three different, active, egalitarian minyanim. Our congregants are comprised of an inclusive mix of religious practices, families of different races, faiths, single-parent and same-sex households. We have an active religious school and a community-recognized preschool. Our chevra kadisha and Beth Shalom cemetery further serve our community. We are actively committed to social and environmental justice, and are highly engaged in partnership with the larger Bloomington and Indiana University communities. Beth Shalom is affiliated with the URJ.

The position of Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Rabbi and the Director of Education. We are seeking an experienced administrator who can lead and work in tandem with staff and volunteers in the completion of daily operations.

The executive director:

  • Provides oversight and day-to-day management of the congregation’s ongoing operations including facilities and grounds, primarily through the work of highly engaged staff and volunteers
  • Brings a “can-do” attitude to the congregation, and a willingness to engage change for the sake of improvement
  • Understands and contributes to the financial and fundraising capabilities of Beth Shalom
  • Can secure technology, IT, and security resources to meet operational needs and advance the congregation’s overall performance in these areas
  • Demonstrates a high level of organizational aptitude for getting things done by working with others, pays close attention to detail, and is highly organized

Specific responsibilities of the Executive Director include:


  • Works with the congregational leadership and committees to fulfill the organization’s priorities and to develop strategies to meet the congregation’s mission
  • Encourages input from members and responds to the needs of the community

Membership & Engagement

  • Works with Membership Committee and Rabbi to help define outreach and membership goals
  • Develops strategies to recruit new members and increase the sense of connection within the community

Fundraising & Development

  • Supports, and when appropriate, takes a lead role in fundraising, working directly with Fundraising Committee and Rabbi to help develop the congregation’s fundraising strategy and annual initiatives
  • Works with members, committees, and Director of Education to produce grant proposals


  • Works with Treasurer and Committees to help develop the budget and to monitor day to day finances and expenditures and cash flow
  • Provides oversight for the bookkeeping activity ensuring that invoices are properly processed
  • Provides oversight for the quality and integrity of the membership database


  • Maintains and improves the Congregation’s communications strategies
  • Works with the President and Rabbi to advance the congregation’s participation and visibility in the community at large


  • Supervises the administrative staff and applies sound HR management principles
  • Works in partnership with the Director of Education, Rabbi and Committee chairs to support their programming, coordination and integration of the congregation’s many activities
  • Promotes inclusion and participation by our diverse member populations and non-affiliated Jewish members of the greater community
  • Helps promote an appropriate and appreciated volunteer environment for the Congregation

While we know that no candidate can be expected to excel in all areas above, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience working in a synagogue environment or in an administrative or professional leadership position in the Jewish community; including the ability to engage and organize in a diverse context fostering a spirit of welcome and volunteerism. The candidate for this position will have demonstrated experience working with congregational finances and the acumen to assume a key role in fundraising and membership outreach. The candidate will possess the diplomatic, interpersonal, written, and spoken communication skills associated with completion of at least a bachelor’s degree. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required.

Compensation: $65K-75K based on experience and qualifications. This is a full-time position. Benefits include: health insurance or stipend for purchase of health insurance, retirement contribution, vacation days, parental leave, synagogue membership, and religious school fees for dependent children.
