The Executive Director (ED) serves as a member of the senior leadership team of Temple -Tifereth Israel, a warm, vibrant, diverse and welcoming synagogue family. The ED brings a dynamic combination of skills and a track record of success in non profit/business management and fiscal operations. This position provides direction and oversight to address priority areas for change, achieve desired outcomes, create efficiencies and innovations, and attract and retain engaged members, staff and community constituents.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategic Planning:
- Commitment to the implementation of The Temple's Vision Statement
- Strong understanding of Jewish rituals, customs, holidays and congregational relationships
- Enthusiasm, creativity and passion for the Temple community
- Liases with Board, Clergy, Program Chairs and Community to drive organizational excellence
- Active participation in all areas of congregation life (some evening and weekend hours required, including attendance at some religious services and most special events)
- Strategic visioning, planning and problem solving to implement effective and timely solutions in the context of organizational vision, mission and values
- Provide leadership and support to the annual All in Campaign and other fundraising efforts
- Participate in Executive and Board Committee meetings, including preparing agenda, reports and discussion topics. Act as staff liaison for various other committees.
- Drives organizational improvement using sound data strategy and analytics
- Assures robust marketing and communications to support Temple Strategy and Operations
Interpersonal skills and People management:
- Build effective relationships with clergy, lay leaders, the Board of Directors, Temple staff and congregation members in various settings
- Demonstrate strong written and oral communications skills
- Ensure effective communications with clergy, lay leaders, Board of Directors, Temple Staff and Congregation members
- Excellent supervision and management skills, providing support and continuous monitoring of goals and deadlines for key staff to achieve desired results.
- Recruit, retain, develop, manage and inspire a high performing staff
- Develop a performance based culture based on data, that delivers measurable results and fosters cross functional communication and collaboration
- Instill passion for vision/mission/values in staff and empower others to build collaborative relationships
- Coach and mentor staff with a genuine interest in their professional growth and development.
Financial and Operations Management:
- Fiscal management including multi-year projections and implementation of strategy for sustainability in partnership with lay leadership and senior rabbi
- Understand financial statements, plan and implement the annual budget process, review financial reports, and make recommendations to drive financial health
- Develop and implement plans to achieve results and goals by anticipating change and effectively managing transitions
- Sound business acumen with a proven ability to manage resources, both human and financial, in order to optimize revenues and reduce expenses
- Mindful of risk management areas where legal exposure may exist for the organization and the ability to effectively engage available legal resources
- Ensure the safety, security, functionality, and cleanliness of the campus at all times
- Project management, negotiation and conflict resolution skills with vendors, contractors or related entities
Relationships:
Reports to Temple President with a dotted line to Senior Rabbi. Supervises Senior Staff.
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree required. An MBA/Masters of Nonprofit Management or similar business degree is preferred, with at least 10 years progressive management experience culminating in an Executive Director role managing personnel, programs, services and operations.
